Shawn Newby, 38, is officially declaring his candidacy for Saanich Council.

Shawn Newby, vice-president of the Quadra Cedar Hill Community Association and co-founder of the Saanich Sunday Farmers Market, will vie for a seat on Saanich council in the Sept. 23 byelection.

Nathalie Chambers, Karen Harper and Rebecca Mersereau are also running to replace Vic Derman, who died on March 17.

Newby, 38, operated his own renovation company and is now a salesman for a countertop company.

He hopes to provide a voice for people he said are not represented: “young families who can’t afford to purchase their own homes in Saanich; pensioners on fixed incomes who cannot keep up with the increased property taxes; homebuilders and businesses who need Saanich to work more efficiently so we can create sustainable growth, protect the environment and provide the amenities needed to build a community that can be enjoyed by all.”

Deadline for nominations is Aug. 18 for a term that will end with the municipal elections in fall 2018.
