A black bear is believed to have attacked and killed a llama on Vancouver Island. A statement from Saanich police says it happened late Monday afternoon at a farm.

Saanich residents are being advised to protect their livestock and pets after a bear killed a llama on Monday afternoon.

A bear was also spotted near Elk Lake on Tuesday morning and crossing the Patricia Bay Highway around lunchtime, prompting further warnings.

Saanich police are not certain it’s the same bear but said it is highly likely given the proximity. B.C. Conservation Service has been notified.

Police and conservation officers were called to a property in the 4700-block of West Saanich Road after a bear killed a llama. Officers saw the bear run from the area and it could not be located.

Saanich police spokesman Const. Markus Anastasiades said it’s believed the bear is not frightened by humans.

Police warned Monday that the bear could return to the area overnight and advised people to protect any livestock or pets.

Anyone who sees a bear should call Saanich police or the B.C. Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.
