The 19-year-old motorcyclist who died Monday in a collision with a car at Cumberland Road and Union Road has been identified as Danny Schupbach.

Schupbach graduated in 2018 from nearby Reynolds Secondary School, the same school the 16-year-old car driver attends.

“This news has certainly added more complexity to this tragedy,” Reynolds principal Tom Aerts said in a letter to parents and guardians. “And we continue to receive support from the school district’s Critical Incident Response Team to help our staff and students as they struggle to process this difficult news.”

He included a script that was to be read out by staff in class Thursday. “Needless to say, this is a tragedy that is impacting many members of our community and we continue to support those affected,” it said in part. “Grief can present in many ways and we really want to support students seeking assistance from our counsellors if that would be helpful.

“At the same time, it is OK if you need classes to continue as normal and don’t feel you need extra support.”

Students were urged to “look out for each other as we move through these tough events.”

Aerts said the news from the week will be acknowledged at the school’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock assembly Friday.
