A seven-year-old child died in a Sooke crash that saw four other family members taken to hospital with critical injuries on Tuesday.

Sooke RCMP confirmed Friday that the single-car crash in the 5800 block of Sooke Road “claimed the life of a seven-year-old.” The B.C. Coroners Service had said Thursday it was investigating a death related to the crash.

Investigators have determined that a black Chevrolet Cavalier was travelling westbound on Sooke Road when it struck a concrete curb near a bus stop before hitting a tree, Sooke RCMP said.

The Vancouver Island RCMP general investigation section is working with Sooke RCMP on the case, said B.C. RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau.

The investigation is expected to be lengthy, he said.

Police, ambulance paramedics, and firefighters responded to calls of a collision about 2 a.m. Tuesday. They arrived to find “multiple persons with serious life-threatening injuries,” said Manseau.

Sooke RCMP said Thursday they are aware of a “high degree of public interest in this incident, and also that there is information circulating on social media regarding the specifics” but said no further details would be released at this time.

Mounties are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the highway from Woodlands Road in Sooke to Veterans Memorial Parkway in Langford between 1:30 and 2:15 a.m. Tuesday to contact the Sooke RCMP detachment at 250-642-5241.
