A short-lived power outage affecting about 27,000 customers in the Parksville/Qualicum area on Thursday was complicated by the fact that two main transmission lines were out of commission at the same time.

The situation began just after noon with reports of a downed transmission line, said B.C. Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk.

He said that while it was fortunate that a B.C. Hydro crew was already in the vicinity doing regularly scheduled maintenance, it was unfortunate that the crew was working on the other transmission line that feeds the area.

“Each line will work as a backup to the other line if there’s an outage — we would just be able to do switching and not lose any customers — so this was very bad timing.”

Power was restored by 1:30 p.m.

Olynyk said the cause of the downed line is unknown.
