A 63-year-old Port Alberni woman died Sunday after a collision on Highway 4, near Cameron Lake.

Police responded to a report of a crash about 10 p.m. and arrived to find B.C. Ambulance paramedics performing resuscitation efforts on the woman, who has pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial police investigation indicates the woman was heading west, lost control of her vehicle and went into the eastbound lane. An eastbound driver tried to avoid her, but was unable to do so.

The eastbound driver was unhurt.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation but Insp. Tim Walton of Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services said there are early indications that the condition of the tires on the woman’s vehicle might have been a contributing factor.

“This is a stark reminder to ensure your vehicle remains compliant with all requirements of the Motor Vehicle Act,” Walton said.
