Police watchdog seeks witnesses to traffic stop near Ladysmith

The Independent Investigations Office had to determine whether the officer used excessive force when he kneed the man in the shoulder and head area and whether this caused a facial fracture which required surgery.

The province’s Independent Investigations Office is casting around for witnesses to a police traffic stop near Ladysmith that resulted in a man being injured.

The organization, which investigates all officer-related incidents that result in harm or death regardless of whether or not a complaint has been lodged, is investigating a traffic stop that happened just after midnight April 17.

According to information provided to the IIO by the RCMP, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a white minivan in the 100-block of Highway 1. The male driver of the vehicle reportedly did not stop.

Police vehicles were used to bring the van to a stop and the man was removed from the vehicle. A police service dog was used to assist in taking him into custody.

According to the IIO, the driver sustained a serious dog bite injury and was transported to hospital for treatment.
