A man found sleeping in a stolen car in Nanaimo alongside a large quantity of stolen items was arrested on a string of property-related charges from Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Victoria.

He was found about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when an a Nanaimo RCMP officer on patrol spotted a car parked on the side of the road, near Shenton and Labieux roads, with the driver’s door ajar.

The officer stopped to look and saw a man was fast asleep inside. The officer then checked the licence plate and determined the Chevrolet Aveo had been reported stolen in Nanaimo three days before.

Among the stolen items found were pieces of personal identification, liquor, break-in tools and a jacket from a security company.

Jackson Filgate, 34, is facing 15 charges including possession of stolen property, possession of break-and-enter tools, theft of mail and breach of probation. He was also charged after a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine was found in his possession.

“The offices have a lot of work ahead of them as they attempt to sort out where and from who the items were stolen,” Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said. “Many of the tools and items found have no identifying markers which makes it that much more difficult to determine where they were stolen from.”
