A smouldering fire on the roof of a Colwood middle school created a scare for students and staff Tuesday morning.

The West Shore RCMP are investigating the suspicious fire, spotted by staff at Dunsmuir Middle School about 8: 30 a.m. The building, located at 3341 Painter Rd., was quickly evacuated and traffic was redirected as firefighters put out the fire.

Students gathered nearby as teachers took attendance to ensure everyone was accounted for, said John Cassidy, assistant fire chief at the Colwood fire department.

Investigators believe the fire may have been left burning overnight, but few details have been released.
