Police dog helps to suss out suspect in theft of Saanich rescue pump

A police dog helped sniff out a man suspected of stealing a rescue pump from the Saanich Fire Department. Saanich police received a report of a break-in at the temporary fire hall at Pearkes Recreation Centre about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A police dog helped sniff out a man suspected of stealing a rescue pump from the Saanich Fire Department.

Saanich police received a report of a break-in at the temporary fire hall at Pearkes Recreation Centre about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A man had gained entry into an enclosure and stolen a hydraulic rescue pump — used to extricate people trapped in their vehicles — from a fire truck.

A Victoria police dog and handler and found a suspect near the Trans-Canada Highway. The stolen pump was located in Cuthbert Holmes Park.

The man was arrested and later released. He faces a charge of break and enter.

“We would like to thank VicPD for their assistance in locating the evidence and suspect on this file and we were pleased to be able to return the important piece of fire rescue equipment back to the Saanich Fire Department,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades.
