B.C. Hydro crews worked all day Thursday to repair power lines after falling trees knocked out power to thousands of customers in the central and north Island and Gulf Islands.

Power was restored to more than 430 customers in the area south of Central Road in Courtney just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday after a tree fell on power lines earlier in the day.

B.C. Hydro crews on the ground were unable to locate the cause of an outage to customers in Oclucje near Zeballos. The utility said it will need to do a survey using a helicopter, which wouldn’t be possible until Friday morning at the earliest due to weather conditions. On Thursday evening, close to 200 customers were without power in the area.

Crews faced difficult terrain and conditions repairing transmission infrastructure to restore power to customers in Port Alice, where close to 700 were told power wouldn’t be restored until just after midnight. B.C. Hydro blamed that power outage on a transmission circuit failure.
