Sue Andrews of Greenpeace Victoria joins other demonstrators for a candlelight vigil in Centennial Square Monday to oppose the expansion of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline.

Vigils were held in more than 40 communities across Canada, including Nanaimo, Courtenay and Gabriola Island. The vigils follow a demonstration Saturday in Vancouver that drew an estimated 5,000 participants.

While the controversial proposal has received support in Alberta for potentially getting more oil to foreign markets, it has been panned British Columbia for environmental impacts and risks.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is due to announce his decision on the proposal by Dec. 19.
