A 26-year-old Parksville man was airlifted to a Vancouver hospital after being struck by a car on Monday night.

Oceanside RCMP said the man was crossing a dark stretch of road with few streetlights on Highway 19A, south of Bay Avenue, in Parksville about 10:30 p.m. when he was struck by a northbound driver.

The driver, a 26-year-old Parksville man, noticed the pedestrian too late to avoid hitting him, police said. The man was not in a crosswalk.

The driver stopped, provided first aid and asked someone passing by to call an ambulance. Police said he co-operated with officers.

The pedestrian was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with significant injuries, and later taken to a hospital in Vancouver. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the collision. They said dim lighting and the pedestrian not crossing at a crosswalk were contributing factors.

Anyone who has additional information or dash-cam footage is asked to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111.
