Nanaimo RCMP say a paddleboarder reported seeing a body floating in the south end of Westwood Lake on Sunday, but searchers failed to turn up any sign of it.

The woman said she saw the body at approximately 4:25 p.m. and immediately paddled to the lifeguard station and called 911.

Police and firefighters, using the fire crew’s quick-response vessel, searched the area but could not locate a body.

They were joined by the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team, which also found nothing.

Officers remained in the area throughout the day to see if any vehicles were left unattended after the park closed, but none were found.

Const. Gary O’Brien said police will continue to monitor the area and respond if there are any further sightings.

Anyone has information on the incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2021-27551.
