One person has died after a Thursday morning fire in a mobile home in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue was called to the Petroglyph Mobile Home Park on Chase River Road about 5 a.m. The structure was engulfed in fire when firefighters arrived.

Fire officials have not said whether the person who died was a man or woman.

“I don’t believe there was anybody else inside the residence at the time,” said Brad Wood, an assistant chief of operations with the fire department.

“Crews arrived on scene quickly and had the fire knocked down.”

He said their was “slight damage” to a neighbouring unit, but it is still habitable.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

“We still have our fire loss-prevention division conducting their investigation,” Wood said.

Fire deaths are rare in Nanaimo, said Fire Chief Craig Richardson.

“All structure fires are tragic, especially when there’s a loss of life involved,” Wood said.
