One dead after vehicle goes off road, crashes into stump near Nanaimo

Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle was heading east in the 1400-block of Nanaimo Lakes Road when the driver lost control and went off the road, Nanaimo RCMP said.

One man is dead and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday afternoon southwest of Nanaimo.

Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle was heading east in the 1400-block of Nanaimo Lakes Road, about two kilometres from Wakesiah Avenue, when the driver lost control and went off the road, striking a tree stump, Nanaimo RCMP said.

East- and west-bound traffic on Nanaimo Lakes Road was affected and vehicles were being re-routed Wednesday afternoon.

The crash, reported to police at 12:30 p.m., is currently under investigation.

The male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The B.C. Coroners Service has been notified.
