An off-duty Victoria police officer recovering from an injury was attacked while walking a dog as a volunteer for animal-control services Monday.

She has been off-duty since suffering a life-altering injury two years ago when she was assaulted by a suspect.

Monday’s incident happened about 12:30 p.m. on David Street when a woman approached her. The woman was agitated and acting erratically and accused the officer of stealing the dog.

The woman physically attacked the officer and the two went to the ground, with the woman striking the officer several times.

The officer did not require medical treatment at the scene.

Const. Cam McIntyre said there is no indication the attack had anything to do with the officer’s occupation.

Police found the suspect a short distance away and arrested her. She was taken to police cells and later released with a court date and conditions.

Charges of assault are being recommended.
