A 25-year-old Oak Bay woman has been arrested in connection with two fires that police are calling arsons.

Both suspicious fires happened on July 26 on Frederick Norris Road, which is off Henderson Road near the University of Victoria.

The suspect was located Aug. 3 in Saanich and remanded in custody. She was scheduled for a Tuesday court appearance.

Two other Oak Bay fires are also under investigation, and detectives will try to determine if there is any connection to the others. Saanich police are leading the effort through a service agreement with the Oak Bay department.

“The service agreement between Oak Bay and Saanich, it’s basically for these types of crimes and anything to do with major-case management,” said Saanich police Sgt. Jereme Leslie.

The two fires deemed suspicious were in a small woodpile in a carport, with firefighters responding about 12:20 p.m., and in a wooden compost box spotted by a neighbour about 6:30 p.m.

Both were extinguished with garden hoses. Firefighters were called to make sure the fires were out and to look for a cause.

Leslie said the location of the fires in a residential area is a big concern. “When things are tinder-dry like this, especially,” he said.
