None of B.C.'s major parties has candidates listed for all 87 ridings

The B.C. Green Party announced several new candidates Wednesday, including five in the capital region.

They include Andy MacKinnon in Esquimalt-Metchosin, Nicole Duncan in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, Kate O’Connor in Saanich South, Jenn Neilson in Victoria-Beacon Hill and Annemieke Holtuis in Victoria-Swan Lake.

Leader Sonia Furstenau has said the Greens are aiming to have a candidate in each of B.C.’s 87 ridings for the Oct. 24 election, but may fall short. As of Wednesday afternoon, there were 44 candidates listed on the party’s website, including Chris Istace in Nanaimo-North Cowichan.

Furstenau is running for re-election in Cowichan Valley, while Adam Olsen is running for re-election in Saanich North and the Islands.

The Greens weren't alone: None of B.C.'s three major parties had candiates in all of the province's ridings as of Wednesday afternoon.

The B.C. Liberals had 73 candidates listed on its website, including 10 in Island ridings:

  • Brennan Day in Courtenay-Comox
  • David Somerville in Victoria Swan-Lake
  • Duck Paterson in Nanaimo-North Cowichan
  • Helen Poon in Mid Island-Pacific Rim
  • Kathleen Jones in Nanaimo
  • Kelly Darwin in Langford-Juan de Fuca
  • Michelle Stilwell in Parksville-Qualicum
  • RJ Senko in Esquimalt-Metchosin
  • Roxanne Helme in Oak Bay-Gordon Head
  • Stephen P. Roberts in Saanich North and the Islands
  • Tanya Kaul in the Cowichan Valley

The NDP had candidates in 74 ridings. The party’s Island candidates to date are:

  • Ronna-Rae Leonard in Courtenay-Comox
  • Rob Douglas in Cowichan Valley
  • Mitzi Dean in Esquimalt-Metchosin
  • John Horgan in Langford-Juan de Fuca
  • Josie Osborne in Mid Island-Pacific Rim
  • Sheila Malcolmson in Nanaimo
  • Doug Routley in Nanaimo-North Cowichan
  • Michele Babchuk in North Island
  • Murray Rankin in Oak Bay-Gordon Head
  • Zeb King in Saanich North and the Islands
  • Lana Popham in Saanich South
  • Grace Lore in Victoria-Beacon Hill
  • Rob Fleming in Victoria-Swan Lake

Horgan called an early election last week, more than one year ahead of the fixed October 2021 date.

The nomination deadline is 1 p.m. Friday.
