Early results in Tofino’s byelection indicate former councillor Dan Law has won the mayoral race with more than 60 per cent of the vote.
Law received 545 votes, while candidates J.J. Belanger took 191 and Andrea McQuade received 168.
Law, a professional artist and former registered nurse, was elected as a councillor in a 2019 byelection.
Cathy Thicke, who has previously served two terms on council, and Jacky Challenger, a yoga studio owner, appeared poised to win council seats, with 410 and 328 votes respectively.
The byelection was triggered by former mayor Josie Osborne’s resignation after winning a seat as an MLA for Mid-Island Pacific Rim in October’s provincial election.
McQuade and Law resigned as councillors in December to run for mayor, opening up the two council seats.
Official results will be declared Monday.
