Arson is suspected as the cause of a car fire Saturday night in Nanaimo.

RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said police are investigating after a fire caused significant damage to the rear of a 2016 Mitsubishi Lance on Thunderbird Drive.

Police officers and firefighters responded to the blaze about 11 p.m. Fire investigators believe the fire was intentionally set with an unknown accelerant, O’Brien said.

Officers interviewed people in the neighbourhood and learned that a car had been racing up and down the street earlier in the evening squealing its tires. However, no one was able to describe the driver or the car, and police don’t know whether the earlier incident is related to the fire.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and cite file # 2020-35470.
