Nanaimo not seeking rent on facilities, extends tax-penalty deadline

Nanaimo is giving a break to organizations renting space in its facilities that are now closed or have been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Council voted to temporarily not seek rent or lease payments.

While the due date for municipal property taxes remains July 2, the date for tax penalties to kick in has been extended to Oct. 1.

Nanaimo is giving a break to organizations renting space in its facilities that are now closed or have been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Council voted to temporarily not seek rent or lease payments.

And while the due date for municipal property taxes remains July 2, the date for tax penalties to kick in has been extended. A five per cent penalty will be imposed on unpaid taxes as of Oct. 1, and another five per cent will be levied as of Nov. 12.

Normally a 10 per cent penalty is immediately imposed.
