Two Nanaimo city workers and a contractor acted quickly Wednesday afternoon to help an elderly couple escape a house fire.

The fire appears to have started near the back deck of the couple’s home in the 1900-block of Estevan Road in Nanaimo around 12:30 p.m., said Stuart Kenning, assistant chief of Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

Three engines responded and firefighters could see smoke and flames coming from the back of the house when they arrived. The couple were the only ones inside at the time, and they were already in the front yard when firefighters arrived, Kenning said.

Two city workers and a contractor who were working in the area helped the couple get out without any injuries, he said.

There is major damage to the back deck and minimal damage to the inside of the house, Kenning said.

The fire possibly started in the area of a sauna in the backyard, but investigators are still working to determine the cause, he said.
