Two fires found in stairwells at a Nanaimo apartment last week are the work of arsonists, say Nanaimo RCMP.

The first fire was reported about 10:15 p.m. Oct. 23 and the second about 3:15 p.m. Saturday — both at the Forrest Glen Apartments on Wellington Road.

No injuries were reported and the fires were quickly extinguished. Burned paper was found at both scenes.

Const. Gary O’Brien credited tenants — one with a fire extinguisher, the other using a bucket of water — for quickly stopping the fire from spreading.

Police have few leads other than a tenant reporting hearing several young voices going down a hallway, away from the fire, shortly before it was detected.

“It is unknown if those people are involved, but investigators would certainly like to speak with them,” O’Brien said.
