Loaves and Fishes, Nanaimo Foodshare and Island Roots Market are using city recreation facilities that would not be open due to the coronavirus.

The Loaves and Fishes food bank has used the Harewood covered sports court to sort refundable drink containers for its Empties 4 Food, raising $6,000. The non-profit organization is planning to hold similar events in the future. For drop-off locations, go to nanaimoloavesandfishes.org.

Nanaimo Foodshare plans to use the Centennial building at Beban Park Recreation Complex to prepare healthy food boxes for pickup starting Wednesday.

Beban Park is also being used by Island Roots Market starting May 13. For market information go to islandrootsmarket.com.
