Name suggestions sought for schools due to open in Langford in 2022

The Sooke School District is asking the public about preferred names for a new middle school and elementary school.

“It’s just the start of our engagement process,” said superintendent Scott Stinson. “We’re using a tool called Thoughtexchange that allows people to put in their ideas and then go back in and rank other ideas.”

The intent is for people to go into the system multiple times, he said.

Ultimately, the goal is to bring ideas forward to the Sooke school board for a decision, Stinson said.

“Eventually, it’s their responsibility to do that.”

So far, Sarah Beckett Memorial, Langford Lake, Westhills and Stewart Young — for Langford Mayor Stew Young — are among names that have been put forward for both schools.

The Sooke School District has funding of $88.6 million in place to build a 500-seat elementary school and a 700-seat middle school at a site on Constellation Avenue. They are due to open in September 2022.
