Motorists travelling Sunday on B.C. Ferries between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen faced two- and three-sailing waits into the evening.

A 8:50 p.m. there was still a one-sailing wait. With the 9 p.m. ferry full, those still in line could catch the day’s last ferry, sailing at 10 p.m. from each of the terminals.

From Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, on Coastal Celebration, the 10 p.m. was almost 90 per cent full.

There was more room on the 10 p.m. from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen, which was at nearly 40 per cent full, on the Queen of New Westminster.

This weekend has been one of the busiest of the year on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route.

The busy Sunday was foreshadowed by a busy Friday, when there were four-sailing waits from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.

The weekend was packed with events in Greater Victoria, including the Tour de Rock bicycling event, which attracted a record 1,800 participants, an estimated 60 per cent of them from outside the area.

B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said this is also traditionally a weekend when many families begin their vacations or end them. “A lot of families either take the first two weeks of August or the last two weeks of August as vacation, so this is typically what we call the ‘changeover weekend,’ ” she said.
