A man has been charged after a Comox Valley RCMP officer was assaulted during a traffic stop in Courtenay.

The officer stopped a vehicle driving near Crown Isle Golf Course just after midnight last Friday and determined after speaking to him that the driver might be impaired by alcohol.

The driver became confrontational, however, and pushed the officer, then hit him in the face before fleeing on foot.

The officer received minor injuries.

Other officers arrived to help, including police dog Hammer.

Hammer tracked the suspect through the golf course, backyards and construction areas before he was found in some bushes near a residence.

Gabriel Ocampo has been charged with assaulting a police officer, obstructing a police officer, refusing to provide a breath sample, driving while prohibited and breach of probation.
