Fatal crash on Hwy 4 near Port Alberni

One of the drivers in a three-vehicle crash west of Port Alberni on Tuesday has died.

A dump truck travelling on Highway 4 about eight kilometres west of Port Alberni collided head-on with two other vehicles shortly after 4:30 p.m., RCMP said.

“The driver of one of those vehicles has died at the scene.”

The other drivers appear to have received only minor injuries, a police statement said.

“It is very early into this investigation and we don’t know what the causes are for this terrible crash at this time,” said Cpl. Amelia Hayden of Port Alberni RCMP.

“Once again, however, visibility in the area was significantly hampered by the dense fog.”

Traffic was re-routed by McCoy Lake Road to the east and Faber Road to the west.

It was the second fatal crash of the day in the Port Alberni area. The driver of a car was killed in a collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of Burde Street and Carriere Road, with Port Alberni RCMP, the Port Alberni Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance responding about 11:35 a.m.
