A male motorcyclist is dead after his motorcycle was involved in a head-on crash with a dump truck on Highway 19A south of Campbell River on Thursday morning.

The collision happened near Heard Road around 8:30 a.m. and shut down the highway in both directions until 3:30 p.m.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Nancy Joyce, spokesperson for E Division RCMP traffic services. The dump truck flipped onto its side and first responders helped the truck driver crawl out from the cab. The truck driver was not injured.

Collision analysts with North Island traffic services were on scene for much of the day collecting evidence.

Two large tow trucks worked to right the dump truck, said Damian Girard, road manager for Mainroad North Island.

B.C. Hydro was also on scene to replace a utility pole that was struck.

It’s unclear what caused the two vehicles to collide.
