A man riding an unlicensed off-road motorcycle sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital in Victoria after a crash in Nanaimo on Tuesday.

The motorcycle crashed about noon on Rock City Road, Nanaimo RCMP said.

Witnesses told officers they heard a noise and discovered the man and the bike in a ditch. Police said it appears that the man was westbound when he lost control and went off the roadway.

They said it is early in the investigation but it appears speed may have been a factor. Officers did not find a helmet at the scene.

Eastbound traffic on Rock City Road was diverted onto Ocean Pearl Terrace while westbound traffic was diverted onto Barrington Road while police examined the area.

Police ask any motorists who were in the area at the time of the crash to check their dashcam video for footage of the motorcycle before it crashed or of the crash itself. Call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 with any information.
