It was mostly smooth sailing for travellers on B.C. Ferries over the long weekend, save for a minor hiccup on the Denman Island to Hornby Island route on Saturday.

To manage the extra volume typically seen over a summer long weekend, B.C. Ferries put on a number of extra sailings on major routes between the mainland and Vancouver Island, said Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs.

“We carried more than 625,000 passengers last year and we expect to see the same volume this year,” she said.

As expected, there was a wave of people travelling to and from Vancouver Island on Friday, a fairly quiet Saturday and Sunday and another surge on Monday.

The Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen route is operating on its summer schedule, with hourly sailings from 6 a.m. from both terminals. The last ferry is usually at 9 p.m. but for the long weekend there was an extra sailing at 10 p.m. from both terminals on Monday.

The Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay route starts at 6:25 a.m. from both terminals and runs until 11:40 p.m. from the mainland and 10:40 p.m. from the Island (with an extra sailing at 9:30 p.m. on Monday).

On the Denman Island to Hornby Island route on Saturday, passengers were delayed for three hours due to a mechanical problem on the vessel.
