The Mill Bay Fire Department rescued a driver whose vehicle veered off the Trans-Canada Highway at the Shawnigan Lake Bridge and plunged down a steep slope early Monday morning.

Traffic on the highway was delayed most of the morning as the firefighters rescued the driver and police investigated. Paramedics took the injured driver to hospital. The highway reopened about 11 a.m.

The Mill Bay Fire Department got the call about the single-vehicle crash at 2:26 a.m. and 14 members responded using extrication tools and high-angle rope rescue gear.

“This is why we train for the worst case scenarios,” the department said on its Facebook page. “You never know when that training and those problem-solving skills will be called upon; even at 2:30 a.m.”
