Military police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a crash involving a Canadian Forces member with CFB Esquimalt, in which the man fled from the scene after his SUV took out a utility pole and slammed into a fence.

Victoria police, Esquimalt Fire and B.C. Ambulance were called to Lyall and Head streets the night of May 5.

The driver fled the scene and was later arrested by military police, who took over the investigation from Victoria police.

“The military police are investigating as to whether alcohol was a factor in this matter,” said Capt. Joanna Labonte, public affairs officer with the Canadian Forces Military Police Group.

“As the matter is still under investigation and no charges have yet been laid, there is nothing more that can be said at this time,” Labonte said.
