The Canadian Forces is investigating allegations that a woman was sexually assaulted at CFB Esquimalt.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service confirmed it is investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred at the Esquimalt navy base in October, but provided few details.

“Investigation on this case is still ongoing and, therefore, I am not at liberty to provide any further information on this case,” said Jean-Marc Mercier, a spokesman for the service. He said releasing details could be detrimental to the investigation.

Mercier would not say exactly when the allegations were made, nor say who has been interviewed.

The service is the investigative arm of the Canadian Forces Military Police.

Mercier said the service is “independent from the chain of command” and conducts investigations with the same standards and policing freedom as any other police service in Canada.
