A man is in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries after falling off the Johnson Street Bridge Saturday night.

Police arrived at the bridge at about 11:40 p.m. after receiving a report that a man had fallen off, said Victoria police spokesperson Const. Matt
Rutherford.

Police said it appears the man leaned on the railing and fell to the ground below.

He was assisted to the street by emergency responders and taken to hospital.

The bridge was closed to vehicles and pedestrians briefly, according to social media posts by residents trying to travel between Victoria and Esquimalt.

VicPD have concluded their investigation into the incident and determined there was no criminal element.

Rutherford said the incident served as a reminder to take caution and be aware while crossing the bridge.

City staff are working with police to determine what led to the man’s fall.

“We’re gathering all the facts to understand exactly what happened. We’ll have more to report really as the facts around the incident become more clear,” said city spokesperson Bill Eisenhauer. “Our thoughts are with the man and his family, and we hope he makes a full recovery.”
