A 20-year-old man who broke into a Nanaimo home and stole presents from under the Christmas tree as the family slept has been sentenced to nearly eight months in jail.

Justin Redmond Feusse pleaded guilty to breaking into a home on Stonewater Drive at 3 a.m. on Christmas Day 2018.

While Joe Lanz, his wife and their sons, ages 10 and 14, were sleeping, two burglars ransacked the kitchen and cleared away the wrapped presents, including two iPhones, video games, clothes and gift cards. Police believe the culprits entered the home through an unlocked kitchen window.

Feusse also pleaded guilty to another break-in, as well as assault and use of a stolen credit card.

Feusse was sentenced to 240 days for the Christmas Day break-in and theft, 21 days for an assault on Nov. 25, 2018, and one day for a break-in at a home in Cedar on Jan. 10, 2017, according to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

He was credited for time served on a charge of using a stolen credit card.

The jail time will be served concurrently.

Feusse was ordered to pay $3,230.45 in restitution to the Lanz family. He must also abide by an 18-month probation order.

Another Nanaimo man, 20-year-old Axel Wolfgang Lambert, was also arrested in connection with the break-in. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 4.
