The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating after a man was found dead in Gorge Park on Wednesday morning.

Someone out for a walk found the man’s body and called 911, said Saanich police Sgt. John Price.

Gorge Park is near Gorge and Tillicum roads. The body was found in a heavily wooded area strewn with clothes and other personal effects, suggesting the man might have been staying in the park, Price said. The man was described as white and in his 60s or 70s.

Investigators and a forensic identification team have ruled out foul play.

The coroner is now in charge of identifying the man and determining the cause of death.

Price said it’s too early to say whether the man died of a drug overdose or of exposure due to the cold weather, which hovered near freezing over the weekend.

The Victoria extreme weather protocol, which makes more shelter beds available, was activated over the weekend but lifted on Monday, Price said.
