A man has been charged with second-degree murder after a woman died early Tuesday in Bowser, northwest of Qualicum Beach.

Luciano Emilio Mariani, born in 1978 and of no fixed address, was charged in connection with the death. The deceased is identified in court documents as Caroline Bernard, CHEK News reported.

Just after 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Oceanside RCMP was called to assist B.C. Ambulance with an injured person in the 5000-block of Thompson Clark Drive West in Bowser.

Police arrived to find a woman “suffering from serious injuries” being treated by first responders.

“Sadly this individual later succumbed to their injuries,” said B.C. RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Chris Manseau.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.

Mariani remains in custody. His next appearance is scheduled for Sept. 7 in Nanaimo.
