A Nanaimo man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting two Port Alberni RCMP officers with bear spray.

Two officers were hit with bear spray Tuesday morning when they were called to a motor-vehicle incident and discovered that a pickup truck at the scene was stolen. A man sprayed the officers and escaped on foot.

A woman who had also been in the truck took advantage of the commotion and walked away.

The officers were decontaminated and were able to complete their shift.

Oceanside RCMP made the arrest Wednesday in Coombs when they located another vehicle that had been reported stolen in Port Alberni.

Christopher Michael Yaskow, 28, is facing 16 criminal charges, including two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property.
