Python among animals seized from property

The SPCA removed 34 animals from a Ladysmith property after they were found in filthy conditions.

The removal included cats, bearded dragons, boa constrictors, turtles, guinea pigs and other small animals.

One of the snakes is a reticulated python, which is prohibited under controlled alien species regulations. Those regulations ban possession of alien animals that can affect the health and safety of people and the environment.

The situation encountered at the property was “very disturbing,” said SPCA Const. Tina Heary, senior animal-protection officer. “There were rotting dead animals, extremely high levels of ammonia from urine, caked feces, murky aquariums and reptiles kept in inadequate enclosures without proper heat sources,” she said. “Many of the animals also lacked access to proper food or water.”

Kramer Lowe pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty and is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 2. He faces up to two years in jail, a $75,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning animals. — Times Colonist
