A man has been arrested for attempted murder relating to an Aug. 6 shooting at a Bay Street rooming house.

Tyler Wardrope was arrested without incident early Wednesday at a Highlands residence by Victoria police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team.

He was scheduled for a Friday court appearance.

In addition to attempted murder, he faces charges of careless storage of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The victim of the incident, Ryan Williams, was shot in the buttocks while he was outside fixing his bedroom window at 1537 Bay St. He is continuing to recover from his wounds.

Rooming-house manager Tony Patriarche said at the time that Williams either took the bullet out himself or it fell out, and he was able to limp to the ambulance under his own power.

Patriarche said four or five shots were fired. One neighbour reported hearing a vehicle speed off after the shots.

Police said the shooting was not random and the public is not at risk.

Bay Street between Forbes and Victor streets was closed for several hours after police responded to multiple 911 calls about 12:45 p.m. Area residents were asked to stay indoors and B.C. Transit buses were rerouted.

The response included patrol officers, a canine unit and plainclothes detectives.

After the incident, Victoria police Insp. Grant Hamilton said the neighbourhood involved is fairly safe and not many calls are made to the area.

The investigation is continuing.
