A man was arrested following an early-morning break-in and foot chase in the Hillside Quadra neighbourhood on Saturday.

At approximately 8:40 a.m., Victoria police were called by the occupants of a home in the 3000-block of Blackwood Street.

A man had broken into their house while they slept, waking them up when he entered the bedroom. One of residents chased the suspect out of the home while the other called police.

Police were provided a detailed description and officers, including a Saanich police canine team, began a search.

At the same time, police received several calls about a suspicious man in the neighbourhood. As officers narrowed their search, a caller reported a man hiding in a tree on Cook Street.

The man jumped out of the tree and fled on foot. After a short chase, he was arrested near Cook Street and Kiwanis Way.

A search by officers revealed he was carrying a weapon.

The man was taken to police cells to await a court date. Police are recommending charges of break and enter and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
