Comox Valley RCMP is urging people to take precautions after more than 12 community mailboxes were broken into overnight Sunday in Courtenay and Comox.

They said that those affected should contact their banks or financial institutions, credit card companies, Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.

Comox Valley RCMP Const. Monika Terragni said mail should be checked daily so thieves will come up empty if they break in at night.

“If you’re going away, ensure someone else is available to collect your mail or contact Canada Post to have your mail held,” she said in a statement.

Police are looking for information on the recent thefts. Call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or go to comoxvalleycrimestoppers.bc.ca
