More than 1,000 people have cast advance ballots in the Victoria council byelection and nearly 3,600 have requested mail-in ballots, city officials said Thursday.

The city was recommending that all mail-in ballots be placed in the mail by Friday to make sure they arrive before 8 p.m. on Dec. 12 in order to be counted.

Victoria voters can still pick up a mail ballot at city hall after Friday, but completed ballots should be returned in person to the drop box outside the Pandora Avenue entrance, at any of the advance voting opportunities at the Crystal Garden, or before 8 p.m. at one of the six voting places on general voting day.

Advance voting continues today and tomorrow at the Crystal Garden and will run from Monday to Wednesday next week.

The byelection is being held to fill a seat vacated by former councillor Laurel Collins, who won the Victoria riding for the NDP in last year’s federal election.
