The Baynes Sound Connector provides ferry service between Buckley Bay and Denman Island.

A log wedged under a ramp at the Thetis Island ferry terminal prevented vehicles from boarding the ferry on Saturday morning.

Only foot passenger service was offered until shortly after 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

For now, service to and from Thetis Island on the MV Kuper is limited to vehicles weighing less than 5,500 kilograms because of the ramp damage.

“Until further assessment has concluded it is safe, no heavy or commercial vehicles may travel to or from Thetis Island,” B.C. Ferries said in a tweet.

Complimentary water taxis between Chemainus and Thetis Island were offered for customers.

The damage had a knock-on effect on other sailings, with the 10:55 a.m. trip from Penelakut cancelled because terminal maintenance staff were moved to Thetis for ramp repairs.

The Tsawwassen terminal also had ramp problems Saturday. The 8 a.m. Queen of New Westminster sailing to Swartz Bay was delayed for 50 minutes as a result.

Heavy demand between Buckley Bay and Denman Island saw the Baynes Sound Connector ferry put into shuttle mode.

B.C. Ferries is anticipating heavy traffic Sunday, with reservations already full on some routes.
