A clerk was roughed up Wednesday during an attempted armed robbery at the Quarterway liquor store in Nanaimo, RCMP say.

A man walked into the Bowen Road store about 3:40 p.m. and produced a gun, which sent the clerk rushing for the panic button, Const. Gary O’Brien said.

“He knocks her to the ground, she runs out of the store to the adjacent pub to alert staff.”

The man took off, likely empty-handed, O’Brien said.

“He was seen getting into a small silver car and going northbound on Bowen Road.”

The man has a medium build and is believed to be in his mid-20s. He was wearing dark clothing that included a black hoodie with an “O” on the front. He also had grey sweatpants with black-and-white stripes.
