Quick-thinking lifeguards at a Langford pool are being credited with saving a little boy’s life after he nearly drowned Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 2 p.m. at the Westhills YMCA-YWCA and Langford Aquatic Centre.

According to a witness, a swimmer noticed that a boy, who looked to be around five years old, was under the water and not moving.

The person called to the lifeguards, who jumped in the pool and pulled the boy out. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The boy was unconscious, said the witness, who did not want to be named.

Lifeguards placed the boy on his back and he started coughing up water, the man said. All swimmers were asked to evacuate the pool and wait in the change rooms. The witness said people were crying and distraught with worry about the boy.

The lifeguards performed CPR and soon word spread that the boy was conscious and breathing.

Langford Fire and B.C. Ambulance responded around 2:12 p.m. and the child was taken to hospital, accompanied by his mother.

“The lifeguards and an off-duty paramedic were able to take control of the situation and render the aid needed,” said Langford Fire Capt. Brian Bell. “When we got there everything was under control and the child was conscious.”
