Mechanical problems with the Spirit of Vancouver Island ferry have led to the cancellation of a pilot program for night sailings on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island, which normally sails between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, is being replaced by the Queen of New Westminster on that route. That means the Queen of New Westminster has had to be pulled off the Duke Point-Tsawwassen run for the time being.

The night sailings were supposed to be in effect Monday to Thursday until Oct. 7, with the ferry leaving Tsawwassen at 9:15 p.m. and leaving Duke Point at 12:15 a.m.

“We were testing it to see how much pickup we’d get from commercial customers, but unfortunately we’ve had to curtail it right now,” said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.

It hasn’t been determined if the pilot will be resumed.
