Joyride on lawn mower no laughing matter, Saanich police say

A lawn mower that was taken out for an unlawful spin and a few doughnuts this week is no laughing matter, according to Saanich police.

A lawn mower that was taken out for an unlawful spin and a few doughnuts this week is no laughing matter, according to Saanich police.

The John Deere riding lawn mower, which has a top speed seven kilometres an hour, was stolen from the Gordon Head baseball shed at Lambrick Park some time after the work day July 9 and driven to the school yard at Torquay Elementary.

The mower left doughnut tracks in the grass and struck two goal posts during the escapade, said police.

The mower was found at the school by staff early Wednesday.

There was minor damage to the mower, which is valued at $3,000, but it was drivable.

Under police escort, it was driven back to Lambrick Park and its rightful owner, said Saanich police spokesperson Sgt. Julie Fast.

Although a driving spree involving a lawn mower seems funny, the thief committed theft and mischief, said police.
